Step 1: Arriving at the Test Centre

You should aim to arrive at the driving test centre about 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. Arriving too early can cause unnecessary waiting and build up anxiety, while rushing at the last minute will instantly spike your stress levels.

  • Park your car in one of the designated test centre bays (usually marked).

  • Your driving instructor will likely accompany you, or if you drove there yourself in your own/private car, make sure you’ve attached a valid L-plate and have an extra rearview mirror fitted for the examiner.

Step 2: Meeting Your Examiner

When your test time arrives, the examiner will come out to the waiting area or car park, call your name, and check your identity.

  • They will ask you to sign a declaration confirming that the vehicle meets insurance and legal requirements for a driving test.

  • You will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres (about 4 car lengths) to prove your eyesight meets the legal standard. (If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, make sure you wear them!).

Step 3: The "Show Me, Tell Me" Questions

Before you even start the engine to leave the car park, the examiner will ask you two vehicle safety questions:

  1. “Tell me” question: You will be asked to explain how you would carry out a safety check (e.g., how to check the brake fluid). This is asked before you start driving.

  2. “Show me” question: You will be asked to demonstrate how you would perform a task while driving (e.g., how to wash the rear windscreen).

Note: Getting one or both of these wrong results in just one minor fault, so don’t panic if you slip up!

Step 4: The Drive (About 38 Minutes)

The practical driving test lasts for approximately 38 minutes (or about 70 minutes for extended tests). During this time, the examiner will guide you along a pre-planned route.

  • General Driving: You will drive in a variety of road and traffic conditions, ranging from quiet residential streets to busier multi-lane roundabouts and dual carriageways.

  • Following Directions: For about 20 minutes of the test, you will follow directions either using a sat-nav (provided by the examiner) or by following traffic signs.

  • One Manoeuvre: You will be asked to perform one of the following parking manoeuvres:

    • Parallel parking at the side of the road

    • Parking in a bay (either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out)

    • Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for about two car lengths, and rejoining traffic.

  • Emergency Stop: The examiner may also ask you to perform an emergency stop exercise (though this is only tested on about 1 in 3 tests).

Remember:

  • Minor faults (driving faults): Small mistakes like slightly hesitating or missing a gear. You can get up to 15 of these and still pass.

  • Serious or dangerous faults: Actions that are potentially dangerous to other road users or pedestrians. Even one of these results in an immediate fail.

Step 5: Returning to the Test Centre and Results

Once you park back up in the test centre bay and switch off the engine, the test is officially over.

  • The examiner will take a few moments to complete their paperwork.

  • They will then give you your result clearly, explaining any faults you made.

  • If you pass: Huge congratulations! The examiner will take your old provisional licence, issue you a pass certificate, and ask if you want your full UK driving licence sent to you automatically. You can start driving immediately (as long as your insurance covers you!).

  • If you don’t pass: Don’t be discouraged—many fantastic drivers don’t pass on their first try. The examiner will give you constructive feedback on what areas need more practice before your next attempt.
